About posters  /  What is an original poster ? 
                             

Original posters are advertisement posters printed by companies, administrations or associations for promotional purposes and were supposed to be pasted on walls in the street. These promotional purposes together with its issue from the original print, give authenticity to an original advertisement poster.

Advertising Posters were printed in one edition of one hundred to a few thousand examples, depending on the marketing plan of the companies. These posters were posted in the streets, shops or train stations. The purpose was to promote a company, a product, an event, a city, or even for healthcare or political propaganda... After a short life of a few weeks posted on walls, they were covered by other posters pasted over them. Therefore most of that  edition was destroyed. They almost disappeared... Sometimes a few of them were not posted and saved by chance or by the earliest collectors. For these reasons original vintage posters are rare, and prized. We buy, restore and sell these documents "d'époque" called original posters. All our posters are original from the first edition unless otherwise indicated. We do not sell reproductions ! In some cases the poster was so good, that the company re-used the same image for a second advertisement campaign. They needed to re-print posters with the same design. The size, color, support, technique of printing could be different. These authorized second or third editions had to be done for the same promotional purposes and for the same company. Sometimes the French word "D'après " is printed before the artist signature, meaning "from the design of ..." We will describe these later authorized editions as precisely as possible. The price asked for them has to be lower than that for a first edition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters as described in our catalogue. Some items offered on this website are not posters. They are clearly described as  signs, enamels, decorative panels, plates... They are also all original and we guarantee their authenticity. original poster 1922 JD Clerc, the gallery owner, has 30 years experience in the original poster business and has the knowledge to appraise old posters. During these years he has seen many exhibitions and poster collections, assembled by private, dealers, museums and archives. He is member of the authenticity committee of the IVPDA, on duty during the "International Vintage Poster Fairs"  to vet the posters during the shows. This experience gave him a unique understanding of old paper, printing techniques and the authenticity of posters.   As founding member of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association "IVPDA", Galerie un deux trois pledges to conduct its business affairs with integrity and to the highest ethical standards.
